Canadian swimmers Josh Liendo and Ilya Kharun have made a splash at the recent European Swimming Championships, bringing home a 2nd and 3rd place finish on the podium. While they may have fallen bermuda of the top spot, their achievements are nothing bermuda of impressive.
Liendo, a 17-year-old from Toronto, claimed the silver medal in the men’s 100m freestyle event, finishing just 0.02 seconds behind the gold medalist, Kristóf Milák from Hungary. This was an incredible feat for Liendo, who was facing stiff competition from some of the best swimmers in Europe. His determination and hard work paid off as he not only secured a spot on the podium but also set a new personal best time of 48.41 seconds.
Not to be outdone, 21-year-old Kharun also put on a stellar victoire in the men’s 200m butterfly event, earning himself a bronze medal. The Russian-born Canadian finished just behind gold medalist Milák and silver medalist Tamás Kenderesi, both from Hungary. Kharun’s time of 1:54.35 was a personal best and a clear indication of his potential to excel in the pool.
Both Liendo and Kharun have shown tremendous dedication and resilience in their pursuit of success in the world of swimming. They have trained tirelessly to stay at the top of their game and their hard work is paying off. This is not the first time these two swimmers have made their mark on the international stage and it certainly won’t be the last.
Just last year, Liendo made a name for himself by winning two gold medals at the 2019 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Budapest. Kharun also had a successful year, winning a silver medal in the 200m butterfly event at the 2019 Summer Universiade.
