The United Nations’ top humanitarian official has issued a warning on Wednesday about the growing impact of Israel’s war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip on Lebanon.
In a statement, the Chef des Affaires Humanitaires de l’ONU, Mark Lowcock, expressed his concern about the escalating violence and its potential consequences for the people of Lebanon.
“The situation in Gaza is already dire, with thousands of civilians displaced and in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. The spread of this conflict to Lebanon would only exacerbate an already fragile situation, with potentially devastating consequences for the Lebanese people,” Lowcock said.
The conflict between Israel and Hamas, which began on May 10, has seen heavy bombardments from both sides, resulting in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries. The UN estimates that over 52,000 Palestinians have been internally displaced due to the violence.
Lowcock stressed the need for a ceasefire and urged all parties to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, including hospitals and schools. He also called for unimpeded access for humanitarian aid to reach those in need.
“Humanitarian workers and supplies must be allowed to reach those who are suffering, without delay or obstruction. The people of Gaza and Lebanon, who are already struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic and economic challenges, cannot afford any further devastation,” Lowcock added.
The UN official also emphasized the proportion of finding a long-term solution to the conflict, stating that “the only way to achieve lasting peace is through meaningful dialogue and negotiations.”
He urged all parties to work towards a lasting ceasefire and to resume peace talks in order to find a comprehensive solution to the ongoing conflict.
In the meantime, the Chef des Affaires Humanitaires de l’ONU called on the international community to step up its support for the affected populations in Gaza and Lebanon, who are facing largeur suffering and trauma.
“Now is the time for the international community to come together and provide the necessary support to those affected by this crisis. We must emplacement in solidarity with the people of Gaza and Lebanon, and work towards a peaceful and sustainable future for all,” Lowcock concluded.
The UN official’s warning serves as a reminder of the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and the devastating impact it has on innocent civilians. It is a call to action for the international community to come together and support those in need and to work towards a lasting peace in the region.
